How it works:
Our youth wrestling season usually runs from the 1st week of November (when first practices begin) and for some athletes, through the end of February (AAU State Tournament). Our Club is split up between the Middle school and elementary age wrestlers. The middle school will practice at Oakland Middle School and the Elementary age wrestlers will practice at the Oakland High School Wrestling room.
OYW(middle school) competes in dual meets with other clubs from around the mid-state. A dual meet is a contest between two teams in which there are 15 matches; one from each weight class. After wrestling a schedule of duals, the conference holds a final Dual Meet Championship in December to decide who has the best team. After Middle School Dual season ends, wrestlers can choose to participate in individual tournaments if they want to continue their season.
While middle school dual season is going on, everyone has the option to preparing for AAU and other Individual tournaments. These tournaments are primary source of getting mat time for youth wrestlers. More mat time= better wrestlers! Tournaments are usually held every weekend (or every other weekend). The individual season ends with the TNAAU State Tournament at the end of February.
Rough Club Schedule:
October: Parent Meeting and Registration (last week of October for elementary age wrestlers)
November: Middle School Dual Season begins - elementary wrestlers will begin practicing.
December: Middle School Conference Finals
January: AAU Individual Season in Full Swing (middle school and elementary)
February: AAU State Tournament (middle school and elementary)
March: National Tournament Season Begins (middle school and elementary)
Practice Time and Location:
Oakland High Wrestling Room
Youth Practice Times –Tuesday from 6:15PM-7:45PM - Thursday from 6:15PM to 7:45PM
Middle School Practice – Monday - Thursday from 3:30PM-5:30PM - (Oakland Middle School)

If you decide to join the Oakland Youth Wrestling Club you must:
What Equipment Do I Need?
If you have not made up your mind yet, come to a practice and all you will need is shorts and a t-shirt.
Once you make up your mind to join, you will need wrestling shoes, a singlet and headgear. Club singlets are available to order at the beginning of the season. Shoes and headgear are usually available locally at Dick’s and Academy Sporting goods. The best bet for size and variety is to order online. We have had good success with www.eastbay.com.
